During the preschool years, your child's musical ability will begin to blossom through cumulative experiences with active music-making, movement, listening games, and ensemble activities. As children's musical perception grows, we begin to introduce the use of solfege and rhythmic syllables, laying the groundwork for music literacy. In our program for ages 3-6, musical learning takes place in the context of exploring the world around us--the changing seasons, nature's habitats, and cultures from around the world.
Cycle of Seasons celebrates your child’s love of nature and growing independence through activities which focus on the seasons of the year. Classes are designed to build attention and self-expression and include singing, chanting, moving, focused listening, musical games and simple folk dances, exploring self-expression through musical instruments, poetry, creative movement, and storytelling.
Music Makers at Home and Around the World is a two-year pre-piano program for children of preschool and kindergarten age. Music Makers introduces critical musical skills and concepts, building a foundation for later study on any instrument. Children are involved in many musical activities: songs and singing games, listening games that build aural skills, moving to music with intention and expressivity, playing patterns and accompaniments on a variety of Orff instruments, including drums, resonator bars, and other simple rhythm instruments, learning more complex dances, and recognizing an ever-expanding vocabulary of rhythm and tonal patterns, both aurally and in music notation.
Year I--Music Makers: At Home--engages children with more songs and sounds from the world of nature, as we discover the beauty and diversity to be found in different environments, such as woodlands, marshes, meadows and the seashore. We will also focus on the children's love of instruments, introducing the families of the orchestra and ensemble play.
Year II--Music Makers: Around the World--draws upon your child’s fascination with all things new and different. In the course of our music-making, we will explore the British Isles, Amerindians, African American culture, and Germany. The children will learn about the musical heritage of each area through traditional folk songs and dances, stories and listening experiences.
Parent involvement is an important aspect of the Music Makers: At Home and Around the World experience. Parents/caregivers are asked to participate with their child in the last 15 minutes of each 60 min. class session. Your involvement supports your child’s continuing musical learning at home, through singing, listening activities and notation games.
Music Keys is a multi-faceted music program designed especially for preschools. In this holistic approach to music in early childhood education, our primary goal is to bring the children and teachers together in music, movement, and environmental experiences that support development and educational growth in the classroom. Music Keys presents music and movement activities to build the sensory-motor foundation for learning, respecting the preschool child's growing independence and developing competencies. The curriculum includes songs, movement activities, focused listening, exploration of instruments and stories for the children to act out and embellish, organized around familiar themes from everyday life.
