Music Makers: At the Keyboard

A path to comprehensive musicianship at the piano for children ages 5– 9 years.

Music Makers: At the Keyboard is designed to lead your child to total music literacy-- the ability to hear internally the music that is written on the page. Conversely, your child will also be learning to play the melody, harmony, and rhythm of a piece s/he hears, without needing to see the written music.

Music Makers: At the Keyboard is a group method. In a group setting, singing games and movement activities are naturally a part of the occasion. The group experience allows children to learn from each other and enjoy making music together, as they develop aural, technical, and music reading skills that will prepare them for future study on the piano or any other instrument. The group also provides opportunities for sharing musical accomplishments in a relaxed setting that diminishes performance anxiety and keeps the fun in music-making.

We recognize that children learn to read and understand musical notation best after they have a strong aural foundation in place.  Through a careful progression of activities, children will be developing those essential musical skills as they learn to play songs on the keyboard.

Time spent at the keyboards is complemented by opportunities for singing, drumming, and dancing to nurture children’s tonal and rhythmic development. Experience with improvisation, composing and musical dictation opens the door to music literacy.

Parent involvement is an important aspect of the Music Makers: At the Keyboard experience. Parents/caregivers are asked to participate with their child in the last 15 minutes of each class session. Your involvement supports your child’s continuing musical learning at home, through practice, workbook activities and games.

A piano or electric keyboard at home is required for this class. In the first year, 15 minutes of practice time 5 days a week is requested. We also offer a Young Musicians program for children of kindergarten age that allows for a more gradual introduction to the keyboard.
